48m high bright & annealing line dismantling

Precision decommissioning at a stainless steel production site

The challenge

At the Outokumpu production facility in Långshyttan, Sweden, Gerritsen Group was commissioned to dismantle a complete bright annealing & pickling line, a highly specialised installation where stainless steel strip enters as plate material and exits as finished stainless steel coils.

A key element of the line was a tower structure of approximately 48 metres high. Originally, the OEM had installed the equipment through an open roof. Reopening the roof was not an option for this project. The challenge was therefore to dismantle the entire installation from the bottom up, removing all equipment through the existing structure while handling exceptionally heavy and complex components.

The solution & execution

Gerritsen Group approached this project with a combination of engineering precision, innovative preparation and controlled execution. Scope of work included:

  • Full dismantling of the bright annealing & pickling line
  • Engineering and removal of equipment from a 48-metre-high process tower
  • Controlled handling of large, heavy and high-risk components
  • Execution without reopening or modifying the roof structure
  • Deployment of 3D scanning technology to map the complete installation in advance
  • Detailed planning based on accurate 3D models to ensure safe sequencing

The result

The complete production line, including the tower installation , was successfully dismantled without structural modifications to the building. All heavy and complex components were removed safely and according to plan.

The use of 3D scanning proved to be a decisive success factor. For the first time on this scale, the full installation was digitally mapped prior to execution, enabling precise planning, risk reduction and smoother on-site operations. Following this project, 3D scanning has become a proven and deployable option for other complex Gerritsen Group projects.

The project was delivered to full client satisfaction, with close collaboration throughout the process.
